In 1979, I fell in love with the martials arts as a bright eyed 8-year-old. 

While other kids were playing with toys, I devoured everything I could about the greats of the field, watching Kung Fu Theater on the weekends and dreaming of being a black belt phenome.  

I begged my dad for money to buy every karate magazine I could get my hands on, like Black Belt, Karate Illustrated, and whatever I could find with karate legends donning the covers.

As I grew older, I eventually won my first kickboxing world championship in 1994 and met my heroes like Joe Lewis and Bill “Superfoot” Wallace. 

But this website isn’t about me or my journey to championship gold.

It’s about something that happens to almost all of us as we age.

Even with all my experience in the martial arts, my body started catching up with me in my 40’s.

I’m talking about back pain and overall body tightness…  

For me it was a strange situation.  When my competitive days were behind me, I didn’t stay consistent with my exercises.  With no fight to prepare for, I got way too comfortable and took my eye off my condition.

That’s when the back aches started.  

If you’ve never suffered with back pain before, it’s tough to describe.

Back pain is serious.  And it can seem like it never lets up.  Sitting down or just walking around can feel like agony.  Soon you’re not able to do the things you once did.  It can limit your life. Imagine sitting in a car or in a plane for hours at a time.  It can be excruciating!   

If you ignore the pain, it only gets worse.  Eventually it can lead to a constant supply of pain drugs, all with significant side effects.  Or you might need surgery and all the potential complications that come with that.  

In my case, my lower back tightened up because my hamstrings were too loose.  Your body adapts, and mine was trying to hold my upper body upright and maintain good posture.

This led to serious back pain in my 40’s.  

As we grow older, especially as we move into our 40’s, 50’s 60’s, and beyond… our hips start to tighten up.  We lose joint mobility. Achy, stiff muscles and joints become the norm.  

Most people just accept it as ‘normal aging’ and let their bodies continue the decline.

Each year adds a new ache or pain.  Joints stiffen up even more.  They add a few more pounds around the midsection.  More doctor appointments are added to the calendar.  More pharmaceuticals are added to the menu each year to keep their body running…

But I have good news for you…

I’m 50-years-old, and I’m probably in better shape today than the day I fought my first world championship.  No, I couldn’t take the hits from kickboxing like I could back then, but I’m wiser, my skills are sharper, and can still drop down into full splits at a drop of hat…without warming up.

Feeling that back pain in my 40’s and knowing the agony I’ve seen others go through as it continues to get worse and worse…I knew I had to do something about it.

And luckily, my previous experiences led me to simple methods to stop the pain in its tracks with a…


Unique System of Stretching and Flexibility Called MAX-ROM.

Over the years I’ve noticed two types of flexibility.

As a professional kickboxer, I sparred with Joe Lewis, the father of American Kickboxing and earned my 7th Degree black belt under him.  I earned my 5th degree black belt under the greatest kicker of all time Bill “Superfoot” Wallace.

Each master added to my skills.

Back in 1993, I was at a seminar led by a top level Japanese instructor who was one of the last men to train with Gichin Funakoshi, who founded the Shotokan System.  

The functional flexibility this master demonstrated was amazing, especially since he was in his mid 70’s.

After chatting with those close to him, I found out they were practicing much of the same tenants as the system I was already constantly mulling over in my head.

A couple of years later, in 1995, during the latter part of my career as a fighter, I was introduced to an 85-year-old Tai Chi master who lived in my city.  This guy was the real deal.  He had grown up in the Hunan province and studied with a Shaolin guy who was in the monastery for two decades and moved to Greenville as an old master.  

In my small town this guy was a treasure, at least for me and my brother.  For five years we’d travel to his house and do Tai Chi Chuan in his basement, until he was 90.  Watching and working with this old master was a pleasure, my only regret is not going more.  We learned many 

forms and Qi Gong exercises.  Before every workout we did together this gray bearded master would prepare for class.  Guess what I kept noticing? 

He spoke No English but one day his grandson was in town to translate and it was revealed.  The old Master had been practicing a variation of the same secret SAUCE I was stirring in my brain that would eventually become part of this secret flexibility system.  It had some variations to what I’d seen in others, but at its core, it was virtually the same.   

This guy was maybe five feet, four inches and I’m six feet, two inches.  He kicked up toward my head and slapped his hand together with his foot in front of my face.   Remember, this man was in his late 80’s.  

How could this man kick his leg up effortlessly and pop his hand in front of my face COLD…when I’m close to a foot taller than him and he was in his late 80’s?
